9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments; his praise endureth for ever.

The subject of this Psalm is the study of the works of God, i.e., the working of the Spirit. The nature of an invisible imponderable power can only be deduced from its working. This working is “great,” and to be “sought out,” or studied, by those who “have pleasure therein,” i.e., interest themselves to understand the subject. This study has practical results (verse 6). “He hath shewed his people the power of his works “-why? “That he may give them the heritage of the heathen,” ie., complete control over all less fully organized modes of Spirit. We are told (verse 7) that the working of this principle is “sure,” there is no uncertainty about it. This recognition is our redemption from the power of the Negative (verse 9). The certainty of it is a covenant, a specific individual realization of “God”; and that is based on knowledge of the Divine Name. The fear of God (verse 10) is the beginning of wisdom, Let the Perfect Wisdom is the Love which casteth out fear.
