Born shortly after the civil war, Wallace suffered a great deal in his early years, but this prompted him to study various religious beliefs and philosophies including Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Schopenhauer, Hegel, Swedenborg, and Emerson.

Through this exhaustive study and application of principle, he discovered the truth of New Thought and put it into practice in his own life.

Partly to clarify things for himself, Wallace began to write books outlining New Thought principles and practice. His personal practice centered on creative visualisation.

His daughter Florence wrote in a letter that Wallace, "wrote almost constantly. It was then that he formed his mental picture. He saw himself as a successful writer, a personality of power, an advancing man, and he began to work toward the realization of this vision. He lived every page ... His life was truly the powerful life."
