This Psalm was written by an old man who in it gives us the summary of his experience. Waiting upon the Lord — verses 7, 9, 34. Christ spoke the parable of the unjust judge to this end, that men ought always to pray and not to faint — also that of the man coming for loaves in the night. It is patient insistence and persistent expectation from the Lord. We are told three times not to fret ourselves because of the success of evil, for it has no permanence — verses I, 7, 8.
Judgment — The true meaning of this word is brought out in verse 30. It is the faculty of true discrimination combined with the will to do justly — not the executing of judgments (as we call them) by God, but a right quality of heart in man. Also verses 6 and 28.
Guidance from the Lord is promised in verses 5, 23, 31. Also protection, verses 3, 7, 19, 24, 28, 33, 39, 40. And this results from our putting our Trust in Him, verses 3, 4, 5, 7, 40.
And in consequence we are bidden to have rest in God (verse 7). And this is by ceasing from anger and from repining (verse 8).
Inheritance — Our inheritance in ultimate Peace and Power is the certain result of thus waiting on God, verses 3, 4, 9, 11, 18, 22, 29, 34.
The way to attain all this is by having the Law of God in our hearts (verse 31). This means a true knowledge of the principles on which these things work and action on these principles.
