a representative way, but equally so to all men as a matter of fact. “Thy Holy One” seems to mean that unsin-ning principle which is the Holy Spirit in man, when he turns to God, and which St. John speaks of in I John 11I: 6 and V: 18. That New Principle in us which is the New Birth, which being itself incapable of sin gradually weans us from sin and purifies us.
The final object is Life. Or, rather, it is a continuous livingness always going on like a path a constant pathway of Life and of Light also. The result is fulness of joy, not gloominess. The Kingdom of God is peace and joy in the Holy Spirit (Rom. XIV: 17).
Psalm 17
HEAR the right, O Lord, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips.
2 Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things that are equal.
3 Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.
4 Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.
