THE SOUL IS INDEPENDENT OF THE BODY
That the soul is independent of the body is proven by the very fact of death itself; for, when the soul leaves it, the body at once begins to disintegrate—because the life principle has deserted it. It is evident that something real has left, for until now the body has responded to some subtle power which is not physical. If the body, itself, could act, it would continue to do so. The body cannot act, it is acted through; it has been a vehicle for the functioning soul, but is now a garment no more fitting: it is thrown aside to return to the dust from which it sprang, while the Spirit returns to the God who gave it.
What is an individual? What is a Man? He is a center of conscious life, intelligence and action, equipped with choice, volition and free thought. What attributes does he possess which enable him to make use of these powers while on earth? Those which we call the senses; and yet we could not take from him any one of them. If the eye could see, it would keep on seeing; if the brain could think it would think on and on forever.
Paul tells us there is another eye behind the physical one, that there is a thinker back of thought, using the brain as a physical vehicle while man is clothed in flesh. And when, by reason of physical inadequacy, the brain is no longer a good instrument the thinker quietly deserts it and takes a new one. (page 175)
