COMMUNION OF SOULS
Question—You know that old saying, "Daytime is night-time of the soul; night-time is daytime of the soul." Is there a communion of souls aside from personal contact? Instead of contacting another in person, may one send his thought? Is not this the "Comforter" of which we read in connection with the statement, "I will not leave thee utterly alone?"

ANSWER-I do not believe that the daytime is the nighttime of the soul. That part of us which is spiritual must be the part of us which is conscious. That part of us which is subjective is the mechanical result of the spiritual and spontaneous consciousness, plus the instinctive urge which comes with us. There would be no real individuality or personality without self-conscious contacts. Hence, it seems improbable that the activities of the mind in its unconscious state could be as real as its activities while in a conscious state. While it is probable that the mind continues to work even during sleep, in this work it undoubtedly follows the suggestions and impulses which have come to it during its waking state. And in all probability there is more or less of a subjective communication going on at ALL times between persons who are in deep sympathy with one another. This communication might or might not rise to the threshold of consciousness. When it rises to the threshold of consciousness it is as a direct message or a telepathic communication. When it does
(page 158) not rise to the threshold of consciousness it is more like an impulse or an urge. The "Comforter" is "Emanuel, or God with us," and is a Spirit within our own mind which forever bears witness to the direct relationship between the Infinite and the finite.
